AGI (artificial general intelligence)

AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is the concept of an Artificial intelligence is a computer system’s ability to perform tasks we associate with human intelligence, such as understanding language, recognizing images or making decisions. More in the glossary → able to understand, learn and carry out any intellectual task a person can, with the flexibility to move from one kind of problem to another. It contrasts with the AI that exists today, called "narrow" or "weak", which excels at specific tasks — translating, recognising images, playing chess — but cannot generalise beyond what it was trained for. AGI does not exist yet and is the subject of intense debate: some experts believe it is close, others that it is decades away or may never arrive. It also raises major questions about safety and control. It should not be confused with superintelligence, which would go even beyond human ability. It is one of the great goals — and controversies — of the AI field.
